A boy from the US has set a goal to learn Chinese and fulfill his dream of learning Kung Fu someday

Wednesday, November 23, 2022

I was born in the US to a Taiwanese father and a mother from Hong Kong. Growing up, my parents influenced me to learn Chinese, although I don't speak it well due to the lack of a Chinese-speaking environment.

Initially, I could only imitate my teacher's pronunciation, and I often struggled with letters like C, B, D, and P. While I have a basic knowledge of Chinese, such as the names of some simple animals, cars, and colors, I require English assistance in class and rely on Pinyin for every word.

My parents believe that I need a Chinese teacher to help me improve my Chinese language skills. I am hoping to build a solid foundation in pronunciation and enhance my daily conversational abilities. My goal is to improve my literacy so that I can read independently and fluently. Fortunately, I met my ChineseLearning teacher, Ivy, who has ignited my curiosity and interest in Chinese culture.

Global Mandarin teacher

Communication is essential, and it may also be included in future exams. Ivy teaches me using the "Children's Edition of Learning Chinese Easily" textbook, along with TPR teaching methods. The course is taught entirely in Chinese and includes fun and relaxed game activities that help guide me to express myself based on understanding. Small exercises are used to deepen my memory and understanding of the language.

Sometimes, Ivy expands on readings by sharing short stories, such as "Painting the Lily" and "Waiting for the Hare." During Chinese festivals like the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Spring Festival, she helps me to understand related activities and cultural customs. I can learn more about Chinese culture from Ivy, which strengthens my literacy and oral fluency.

With Ivy's help, I've made significant progress in learning Chinese. I can now spell words correctly and write their Pinyin. My vocabulary and literacy have greatly improved as well. I am now able to hold conversations with my teacher and read simple stories by myself. My comprehension and vocabulary have improved, and I can understand my teacher's daily expressions. I can even read common words fluently without the need for Pinyin.

Throughout the learning process, Ivy has helped me classify and summarize various literacy methods, including radical classification. This has been incredibly useful, and I can recognize around 300 common Chinese words. Writing is no longer difficult for me, as I've mastered certain writing rules, such as writing from left to right and top to bottom. Overall, learning Chinese has become a fun experience!

Disneyland in Hong Kong

I have been learning Chinese for nearly four years online and through textbooks. I have made great progress, from learning simple words at the beginning to expressing myself in paragraphs now. Every year, I visit my grandparents in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and I speak Chinese with them. During one of my visits to Disneyland in Hong Kong, I met some Chinese children and was able to communicate with them using Chinese. They were impressed with my proficiency in the language.

I plan to continue learning Chinese because I love Chinese stories and culture. Additionally, I am currently learning Chinese Kung Fu, which is fascinating. One day, I hope to participate in a Kung Fu competition in China.
